If you’re from Brazil, over the legal drinking age, and have visited a local store within the last 10 years; it’s very likely that you’ve seen, or at least heard of Engov.
First introduced to the Brazilian market in the 1960s, Engov is a Brazilian hangover cure that traces its popular use back to the 1960’s, when a character in a Brazilian soap opera used Engov to temper his hangover. ENgov is now famously known to “work as you sleep to cancel out the negative effects of alcohol, detox your system and flush away the poisons that lead to a hangover.”
Outside of Brazil, it seems that Engov is not too widely known. But after speaking to several people from Brazil about our own hangover cure supplement Sobur, I would inevitably be told “oh, so Sobur is like Engov?”
Left without an answer, I had to do some research into what this infamous Brazilian pill is all about. Here’s what I found out…

What’s in Engov: Ingredients & Amounts
Engov is manufactured by the Brazilian company DM Industria Farmaceutica (quoted in some places as being manufactured by ‘Newlab Industria Farmaceutica‘, based in Sao Paolo) and from the information available about the hangover pills online, it’s ingredients list is short & sweet:
- Maleato de mepiramina (DCB 5652) – 15mg
- hidróxido de alumínio (DCB 4694) – 150mg
At least that’s what is listed as the ingredients on the packaging. Some basic research revealed that the full list (in English) includes aluminum hydroxide, caffeine (cafeína, around 150mg worth), acetylsalicylic acid (ácido acetilsalicílico, 150mg) and pyrilamine maleate. These ingredients can all be found in antacids, aspirin and antihistamines, respectively.
Usage
Your supposed to take one Engov pill before your first drink, and another after the last. It’s well known to help the next day, too.
Does Engov Work?
Just looking at the ingredient list, it is pretty easy to tell that Engov is likely to have the effectiveness similar to a paracetamol tablet and a strong cup of coffee. That is, it will have some effect, but not much.
People have sworn by the Brazilian hangover pills for years though, so perhaps it’s worth getting your hands on some yourself and giving it a go…
Where can I buy Engov?
If you’re in Brazil and have over-indulged in the Caipirinhas, aka got bêbado (drunk) the night before, you can do what the locals do and stop into your local farmácia to buy some gold packets of Engov. It is a cheap package that is available over-the-counter without prescription.
It is hard to find the product outside of Brazil, however, but with a little resilliance you can find it on a few websites.
The most trusted source seems to be a website called Engovwetrust, but I was also able to find Engov for sale online on both Ebay and Alibaba.
